History and gastronomy

Take your time admiring the pink spire of the Cathedral. Then look down to the corner of the square and discover one of the most original buildings in Alsace dating from the Renaissance : La Maison Kammerzell.

It was built in 1427 and its architectural facade as we admire it today was created in 1467 and 1589. The house has been on the list of «Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques» since 1929.

In the picture you can see the famous alsatian painter Leo Schnug who executed the superb frescoes inside the house in 1904 and 1905. On the walls of the first and second floors, frescos such as "The nave of the madmen", "The dice players" and "The torment of Tantalus" give the rooms their exceptional atmosphere.

Several generations of tradesmen have owned la Maison Kammerzell. We owe the three wooden stories and the wooden Renaissance sculptures adorning the timber frame of the house to Martin Braun, a wonderful cheese seller. What a unique destiny when you think that Maison Kammerzell is today entirely dedicated to gastronomy.
